UU009: DV8
***ONLY AVAILABLE VIA OUR BANDCAMP PAGE***
DV8 is an absolute masterclass in jazz in its many forms and facets. ranging from the breezy swing of bossa nova ("I'm not lyin") to the sensational towering sound of big band ("tough luck") to the tour de force freeform jazz of its title track and just about every destination on the jazz spectrum in between. this is thanks, in no small part, to dan's longtime friend/collaborator dr. john mills, who helped produce and facilitate the sessions for what would be dan's final released album under his own name.
there are tracks on here that will challenge even the most seasoned jazz cat, and feel-good compositions that deserve to be full-blown standards by now (most especially "makin' good time" and the eponymous instrumental composition dan made in honor of his father, "dominick")
it's important to say that this was the last album dan recorded in austin before fleeing the country in 1992. going off the lam severely hindered this record's release, as dan was never able to promote it or even properly release it, leaving only a few CD copies in existence floating around texas. it is, without a doubt, his rarest work from the pre-exile period of his career.
