This might be Dan's most internationally renowned work (it was only pressed and released in the UK on the international division of Earthworks), with a fascinating story tied to it. See, dan was obviously a songwriter and performer first, but much like the artists he idolized and championed, political activism played a huge role in his later work.

This record, along with dan's 1990 album "Off Your Nyash" (available via Rounder/Concord) are chock full of political statements and protest songs, with topics ranging from the atrocities committed by the CIA to South Africa's apartheid to the arrest of legendary nigerian artist/activist Fela Kuti.

Track 5, "Free Fela," sparked a mutual admiration of sorts. as a matter of fact, upon his release from jail in 1986, Fela flew to Texas to meet and perform with Dan at the Austin Coliseum. Sleek production from Dan's longtime friend and secret weapon Slim Heilpern, some of Dan's most intense vocal performances, drum machines so heady that they'll give you whiplash, and top tier musicianship by the majority of the original Professors of Pleasure lineup... What's not to dig?
