UU007: My Own Country
***ONLY AVAILABLE VIA OUR BANDCAMP PAGE***
"My Own Country" is a snapshot of time in which Dan briefly returned to his country music roots. Before he coined the term "world beat" and started to make music with a fusion of influences the world over, dan was a Poughkeepsie cowboy, fronting progressive bluegrass and country outfit "The Arm Brothers."
In fact, it was a shared love of country music that brought dan and his best friend Terry Lickona (who would go on to produce the Austin City Limits TV program for 45 years and counting!) down to Austin in the first place. The two roadtripped in from Poughkeepsie to see Willie Nelson's Fourth of July Picnic in 1974 and ended up both leaving their mark on the city that beckoned them in.
There's plenty of classic, tried and true country on this record, with a lot of Dan's best guitar work on full display… but along with that come some anomalies like "Without You," which feels more like blue-eyed soul + yacht rock than country music, and the conga driven bayou hop of "Louisiana."
Dan Del Santo - Guitar and vocals
Paul Constantine - Trumpet
John Ely - Pedal steel, lap steel, and dobro
Paul Glasse - Mandolin
Penny Hanna - Bass and background vocals
Slim Heilpern - Guitar and chromatic harmonica
Dan Huckabee - Dobro
Junior Jackson - Drums
Danny Levin - Fiddle and piano
John Mills - Sax and clarinet
Craig Toungate - Background vocals.
